Torque vs Tension. Which is right for you?

Before comparing Torque and Tension, we need to first understand what they are, and how do they work. “Torque” is a measure of how much force is required to spin the nut up along the threads of a bolt.  “Tension” is the stretch of a bolt that provides the clamping force of a joint. Both methods are suitable ways to seal joints, and they both have their pros and cons.

  • On large bolt diameters you will save time compared to using torque wrenches

  • More complicated

How do Hand Torque Wrenches Work?

Torque is the measurement of distance times force. One foot away from the fastener and one pound of force applied, is one foot pound of torque. A torque wrench allows fasteners to be tightened to the proper tension. The handle contains an internal indicator which connects to a calibrated scale. Once you have reached the desired torque, you can stop twisting the bolt. Most torque wrenches come with an easy-to-read screen.

How do Hydraulic Torque Wrenches Work?

There are 2 different types of hydraulic torque wrenches. Hydraulic square drive (TWHC) and a hydraulic low profile (TWLC). The Wrenches are placed over the nut or fastener then verifying that the reaction arm or pad firmly and squarely connects to the selected reaction point or area. Start the hydraulic pump and advance the hydraulic torque wrench. As the wrench strokes forward the reaction pad will react against the reaction point and the socket or hex will rotate. When the hydraulic torque wrench reaches the end of its stroke, the pump pressure will build rapidly.

To reattract the torque wrench simply release your finger from the advance button on the hand pendant control. The wrench ratchet mechanism will be heard clicking as it retracts, apply another forward stroke. Repeat this process until the desired input pressure has been achieved.

A hydraulic torque pump unit powered either through air (PA554, RWP554, RWP554-BS, PA60A) or electric (PE554, PE554TWP, PE39, PE45)  then connected to a torque wrench through twin line hoses (TWH15-BS) these system are capable of operating at 10,000psi.

How do hydraulic tensioners work?

First, the nut is hand tightened on the stud. You then mount the tensioner on the stud-nut assembly. Hydraulic pressure is applied which then stretches the stud, the stud’s nut is wound down against the joint face, then pressure is released and the tool is removed.

Tensioners can be a lot faster than torque wrenches, as you can tighten all tensioner cells at the same time.  This does come at a larger cost than if you were to buy torque wrenches and there is a lot to consider and take into account to make sure the tensioning cells fit correctly.
